STOP DR. LAURA/SAN FRANCISCO ANNOUNCES
PROTEST AGAINST KPIX-TV
May 8, 8AM

Activists outraged by station’s decision to run show by anti-gay talk show host

San Francisco activists, working in conjunction with the national StopDrLaura.com campaign, will hold a protest against KPIX-TV on Monday, May 8th at 8 am. The protest will be in front of KPIX headquarters, 855 Battery Street in San Francisco. San Francisco Board of Supervisors President Tom Ammiano will address the rally, and other elected officials have been invited.

The protest is in response to the station’s decision to broadcast talk show host Dr. Laura Schlessinger’s (known as "Dr. Laura") television show this fall. Dr. Laura has used her radio show as a platform to spew anti-gay rhetoric, calling gays and lesbians "biological errors" and comparing gay men to pedophiles. Paramount Television is now syndicating her television show, with many CBS affiliates planning to run it starting this fall.

"Dr. Laura has the right to express any opinion she wishes, however incorrect and hateful it may be," said Ryan Clary, coordinator of the May 8th protest. "However, nowhere in the Constitution does it say that TV stations need to provide a forum for such inflammatory rhetoric just to make a buck.. KPIX has turned its back on San Francisco’s queer community by choosing profits over integrity."

Activists have notified KPIX that if it continues with plans to run the show, they will mount a boycott of the station.

"This is an issue of corporate responsibility and we will hold San Francisco companies responsible for decisions that affect our community," said Board of Supervisors Tom Ammiano. "We hope that KPIX will have a change of heart and demonstrate moral leadership on this issue."

StopDrLaura/SF activists is urging the public to call Jerry Easton, General Manager at KPIX, and Rosemary Roach, Program Director in support of their efforts. They can be reached at (415) 362-5550.
